PSALM 98

OF THE HYMN THUSLY TITLED BY ISAAC WATTS (1719)
JOY TO THE WORLD

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is the "Father of English Hymnody." His hymn Joy to the World is a paraphrase of Psalm 98. It was included in his Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, and Applied to the Christian State and Worship published in 1719. It undoubtedly would have grieved him to know that the singing of this glorious hymn is by so many restricted to the Christmas season.

Joy to the World is sung to "Antioch" by George Frederick Handel (1685-1759). He was a devout Lutheran who resisted many efforts from Rome and London to change his faith.

The text of the hymn here appears with explanatory footnotes.

Joy to world!1 the Lord is come!2 / Let earth receive her King;3
Let every heart prepare Him room,4 / And heaven and nature sing.5

Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns!6 / Let men their songs employ;7
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, / Repeat the sounding joy.8

No more let sins and sorrows grow, / Nor thorns infest the ground;9
He comes to make His blessings flow / Far as the curse is found.10

He rules the world with truth and grace,11 / And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness, / And wonders of His love.12

Joy to world! the Lord is come! / Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room, / And heaven and nature sing.
