"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." (Matt. 11:28-29)
Most people are sadly deceived into thinking that peace and rest are products of their own ingenuity. There is a peace and a rest that this world offers but it only lasts for a time. They are looking for an emotional peace. The problem is that most people do not realize they need to have a spiritual peace with God before they can ever have emotional peace. This peace, when given, is a permanent peace that endures through the deepest trials as well as for all eternity.
Man is born into this world as an enemy to God because he is a sinner and hates God by nature. Unless peace is made, God's wrath will be upon him for all eternity. No man likes to have enemies but can you imagine having God as your enemy? This is precisely the case with all men.
How thankful we ought to be that God has made peace with sinners. This peace is not the product of man but rather the product of Christ making peace with God on behalf of the elect by satisfying God's justice. Christ suffered and died for the elect thus paying all by Himself the full penalty of their sin. The Father accepted the substitutionary work of His Son on behalf of His elect. Peace was established between God and His elect by the Lord Jesus Christ. This peace is found only in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. You may try anywhere else and you will not find lasting peace. This is why Christ exhorts sinners as He does in the above verse. You look to Christ and you will find a peace that "passeth all understanding". This is the peace that sinners need.
