When Jesus perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. John 6:15
These people were afflicted with what all men are troubled with, big-shot-ism. They wanted to make somebody something high and mighty, but our Lord left their company for He wanted no such honors. The purpose of His coming was directly contrary to this,' Matt. 20:28 He came to minister. The Lord Jesus never changed, but was always clothed with humility (1 Peter 5:5).
He was a nobody from nowhere. The Savior was born of a poor woman and spent the first 30 years in a carpenter's home at Nazareth. His companions were not men of influence, but most were poor fishermen. He was poor in His manner of living: The Son of man hath not where to lay His head (Matt. 8:20). The health and wealth hucksters must have passed over this.
When He went on the Sea of Galilee, it was in a borrowed boat. When the Lord rode into Jerusalem, it was on a borrowed animal. When He was buried, it was in a borrowed tomb. And all of this was for our sakes (2 Cor. 8:9).
Our Savior teaches us this: popularity and the good opinion of excited crowds are both worthless and temporary. Vance Havner said he sat down in a place and saw a magazine entitled, "Who's Who." And he said next to it was another magazine entitled, "Who Was Who." How quickly we go from hero to zero!
The most common sins among men are pride, ambition and high-mindedness. Where are the foot-washers? If I then, your Lord and Master, hare washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet. (John 13:14). Do you want to be exalted? That happens while you scrub the dirt off someone's feet. He that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 18:14).
I really do not even understand what I have said, because it is so foreign to man's thinking. Lord, help us!
