"I am afraid I only have a head knowledge of Christ," is a fear that is often expressed, and is a legitimate fear. Knowing something of the deceitfulness and hypocrisy of our hearts, we have good reason to fear that, and to ask ourselves the question, "Do I really know Christ?" How can we determine whether or not we truly know Christ? This question can be answered!
1. CAN YOU TRUST HIM ALONE TO SAVE YOU?
Can you let go of all your works, your religious experiences, your good intentions, and anything else that has anything to do with you, and trust Him alone to bring you to glory? Do you see that His blood is enough, His righteousness is sufficient, and that He alone is all you need to make you accepted before God? If you know Him, you will, and if you don't, you won't.
2. DO YOU LOVE HIM?
Do you see Him as the altogether lovely One, and do you hate yourself for not loving Him more? To know Him is to love Him in ALL His attributes, offices, and ways. If you know Him, you will love Him; and if you don't, you won't.
3. ARE YOU COMMITTED TO HIM?
If someone walked up to you on the street whom you did not know, and asked you to trust him with your life savings, you would laugh at him. But if there was one whom you knew, if there was one in whom you had complete confidence in his integrity, and you knew he would act in your best interests, if he asked you for your life savings so he could take care of you, you would commit it to him, because you know him. If you know Christ, you will commit everything to Him, all you are and have, to be His and His alone. If you don't know Him, you won't.
"Do I know Him?" Do you trust Him alone without your works? Do you love Him? Are you committed to Him? If you can say yes to these three questions, then you truly do know Him. If you cannot say yes to any of these three questions, then your knowledge of Christ is only a head knowledge.
