Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. Eccl. 4:6
Ah, quietness! How great a gift from our Maker. Oh, travail and vexation of spirit! What a curse greediness has wrought upon mankind!
Here we sit in the early morning with a good cup of coffee and the sun just coming over the horizon. How much money in the bank? Well, let's see; if we pay the electric bill we will have seventeen dollars left. What? Seventeen dollars to do anything we want? How wonderful that is! The spirit is quiet, and all is well. A handful with quietness is better than both the hands full and wishing we had a third hand to grasp more.
What else do we have? Well, we have life from God in the blessed Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. We have peace with God through the merits of the Redeemer. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1). We have peace with our neighbors, because our Lord has caused us to love them as ourselves. We have true friends who stand ready to come to our aid. How much more could we name?
So, I'm just writing this to thank our heavenly Father for quietness with HIS handful, for He has promised that the barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail (1 Kings 17:4).
Lord, evermore keep us from grasping greediness. Set our affections on HIM who had no place to lay His head.
