SIMPLE FAITH?
Romans 1:8

Jack Shanks

I thank my God through Jesus Christ that your faith is spoken of.

We hear the expression, "Simple faith will save you." Simple? One of Webster's definitions is "plain, uncomplicated." If you have the idea that the faith that delivers from the consequences of loathsome sin is uncomplicated, then you try to get hold of some of it. Of course, religion has it that faith is in man, and he only has to "exercise" it. No, my friend, the need is not exercise, but rather possession.

Saving faith in not inherent in man but is totally foreign to his nature. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Author of our faith (Heb. 12:2). He writes faith in our hearts. This is a sovereign gift that is not of yourself(Eph. 3:8). All men do not have this faith(2 Thess.3:2). If it's so "simple", why don't all men get some of it? They don't want it and can't get it.

Man is without this faith, but he can fake it. Paul wrote to Timothy that he was glad the faith he had was "unfeigned" (2 Tim. 1:5).

This faith is holy faith. "Your most holy faith." (Jude 20). Can that which is holy be simple? Since man is an unholy monster, the only thing that can impart holiness to him; is the faith of God's elect given to him by the Lord because it seemed good in His sight. The Lord Jesus thanked the Father for this (Matt. 11:25-26).

I freely admit that we are saved by the blood of the righteous Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. We have faith in His blood (Rom.3:25). If a man will only believe in that blood of the Lamb of God, he is forever justified before the holy God.

We must say that this faith is not "simple", but is the most profound thought of the mind of the infinite God. Understand it? Not me! Delight in it? Oh yes, with all my being, for He gave me the faith that saves. We must be careful how we talk of the things of the Lord. Don't give sinners the idea that they are looking at easy things. Old sinners wallow In sin and have been told that anytime they "decide" they can believe. It's not that simple.

Simple Faith?
