Throughout the Bible, names were given that had great meanings: Jacob means cheat, supplanter; Caleb means faithful dog; Moses means drawn forth, taken out of the water. You see that the name says something about the person. Such is the case in the name Jehovah, which describes the character of God. Our Lord is known throughout the OT by this sevenfold name which describes His glorious character and His perfect, redeeming work.
1. JEHOVAH-JIREH; the LORD will provide (Gen.22:14). This is a good description of our Lord's character. He has provided for His people everything necessary in our salvation (I Cor. 1:31; Eph. 1:3). In Christ Jesus there is nothing lacking.
2. JEHOVAH-RAPHA; the Lord that healeth thee (Exo. 15:26). How suitable is this name to describe the Lord Jesus Christ in taking our sins to Himself and making atonement for them. Isaiah said, "With His stripes we are healed" (Isa. 53:5).
3. JEHOVAH-NISSI; the Lord our banner (Exo. 17:15). The Lord's banner over His people is love (Song of Sol. 2:4), eternal unchanging, sovereign love. Where is that love revealed? Only in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:39; I John 4:10).
4. JEHOVAH-SHALOM; the Lord our peace (Judges 6:24). Our Lord made perfect, eternal peace with God through His precious blood (Col. 1:20; I Peter 1:18). No judgement in him.
5. JEHOVAH-RAHA; the Lord my Shepherd (Psa. 23). Our Lord is called the Good Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd. Truly this is a fitting name for such a great Savior.
6. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENUE; the Lord our righteousness (Jer. 23:6). It is established in scripture that we cannot produce any acceptable righteousness of our own (Isa. 64:6; Rom. 3:9-20). The only hope any sinner has is the Lord Jesus Christ. He perfectly obeyed and honored God's holy law as the beleiver's substitute (Isa. 42:21), thereby freely and sovereignly imputing righteousness to those who believe (Rom. 4:1-8).
7. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH; the Lord is present (Ezek. 48:35). Our Lord has eternally promised that He would never leave us nor forsake us, in this life nor the one to come (Heb. 13:5).
