Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.1 Cor. 11:27
Is there anyone here who is worthy in yourself to come to His Table? God's people are sinners saved by grace. Our only worthiness, our only righteousness is Christ, and anything more or less is a denial of the very gospel which the Lord's Table symbolizes.
If we are looking to our own character and conduct for grounds to commune with the Holy God, we are denying the gospel of free grace wherein all the conditions of salvation were laid upon Christ. To us salvation is unconditional. To look to ourselves is only self-righteousness and pride. Do you ever feel worthy in your character and conduct? Then your self-righteousness has deceived you, and you have missed the gospel. When we speak of worthy, we speak of the Lord Jesus Christ. HE alone is worthy.
