The Psalmist David, a man after God's own heart, expresses in Psalm 84 the longings, the desires of one who has been born from above. In verse 2 he says, "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God." The Spirit of God puts in the hearts of God's elect a desire and longing that was not present before and would not be present now did He not make it live within. It is a longing for "the living God." Nothing in the world, nothing offered by the religions of the day and nothing in or done by David can satisfy it. Only the glorious God of all grace. And while he does experience the Lord's presence in private and in the activities of providence, nothing satisfies like God's special presence He has promised amongst His assembled and gathered out people. That presence which He has promised to the two or three He has gathered in His name. "There I will be in the midst.." When the disciples were gathered together after the death of Christ, He showed Himself in their midst and what a great blessing they enjoyed. "Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. The "courts of the Lord" in our day are simply those assemblies of His chosen, redeemed, regenerated and worshipping people in which He manifests His presence, has established His throne of grace, is exalted in the preaching of Christ crucified and receives the praises of those He has saved. To be in the midst of a worshipping people is truly "heaven on earth." Is this your desire? If it is what you truly desire, it is what you will do! David added, "Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee."
