I AM
Exodus 3:14

Gary Shepard

When Moses received command from God to go down to Egypt and to confront Pharaoh, the Egyptians and the Hebrews with the command for God's people to leave the land, Moses asked, "What shall I say unto them?" God answered and said to Moses, "I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." (Exo. 3:14) This name by which God identifies Himself reveals much. It declares God to be eternal. He exists without beginning and without end. He is unchanging. He is the "I AM": "I am the Lord I change not." It is much like an old man once said, "I am was, I am is and I am always will be!" This is God and especially as He reveals Himself in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, the GodMan. Christ himself spoke of His existence before Moses and even before Abraham. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am." (John 8:58) Paul describes Him as "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." (Heb. 13:8) John sees Him in the Revelation as "him which is, and which was, and which is to come; (Rev. 1:4) But Christ is the great I AM of grace, mercy and salvation. Hear His words in the gospel. "And Jesus said unto them, I AM the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6:35) "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I AM the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (John 8:35) "I AM the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." (John 10:9) "I AM the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep." (John 10:11) "Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:" (John 11:25) "Jesus saith unto him, I AM the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) Christ is bread for the soul, spiritual light in darkness, the door of entrance to eternal blessing, resurrection from physical and spiritual death, the way to God, all truth and life itself! Christ is and always will be, the I AM of salvation. Is He such to you?
