IN WHOM WE HAVE REDEMPTION
Col. 1:14

Tom Harding

Redemption and deliverance from sin is only possible through the Lord Jesus Christ and the shedding of His precious blood. As the Kinsman Redeemer, He is the only one who has the right to redeem, the ability to redeem, the willingness to redeem and the power to redeem His chosen people from all their sins (I Jn. 1:7). Jesus Christ purposed and decreed redemption ineternity (Rev. 13:8) and fully accomplished it at Calvary (Jn. 19.30). We can learn several important facts about God's redemption from Colossians 1:14.

1. THE PURCHASER OF REDEMPTION, "IN WHOM!"

My friend, never lose sight of the truth who the Redeemer is. Who is this one dying to purchase and save His sheep? In verse 15 we have the answer clearly stated, "Who is the image of the invisible God." Jesus Christ is God almighty manifested in the flesh, who came to freely give His life a ransom for many (Matt. 20:28; Heb. 1:3).

2. THE OBJECTS OF THIS REDEMPTION, "WE!"

All who have been chosen, predestinated, accepted and called in Christ Jesus will be redeemed. Our Lord did not make a feeble attempt to save all men everywhere, He made an effectual atonement to save His people from their sin (Jn. 6:37-40). All for whom Christ stood as Surety and Mediator will be saved.

3. THE PRICE OF REDEMPTION, "HIS BLOOD!"

It is not possible to put away sin by our works (Rom. 3:19-20). Because our sin is against an infinite God (Ps. 51:4), our sacrifice must be of infinite value. The only sacrifice that God will accept is the one He provided, Jesus Christ (I Peter 1:18).

4. THE RESULTS OF REDEMPTION, "FORGIVENESS OF SINS"

The blood Jesus Christ shed at the cross was not shed in vain. His blood atonement actually put away the sin of His chosen people. So powerful and complete was His redemption that God said - "Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more" (Heb. 10:17). "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgression from us" (Psalm 103:12). "He will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea" (Micah 7:19).
