"THE EVERLASTING COVENANT"
2 Samuel 23:5

Gary Shepard

From the opening pages of scripture in the book of Genesis to the last chapter of the book of Hebrews, we read of a "covenant" that is described as "everlasting." What a joy it is to consider the glories of this covenant! It is a covenant made by God Himself for He alone is eternal. Since it is eternal, it was made before time and outside of time and yet, it determines that which takes place in time. The term "covenant" speaks of a pledge or a testament made within the Godhead in which He purposes to make certain individuals the objects of His mercy and special grace. David confessed this with great gratitude and comfort: "He hath made with me an everlasting covenant…" Since this covenant was made by God, both His honor and His faithfulness are at stake in the carrying out of its every detail. Thus, carried out and fulfilled it shall be! David again declared it to be "ordered in all thins and sure." Yet there is something else that we must see about this covenant. While it is everlasting and before time, its fulfillment and success are dependent upon something done in time! The Lord Jesus Christ is said to be the "Angel, the Messenger and the Mediator" of this everlasting covenant. He is the Testator of this covenant whose particular death in time ratifies it. This covenant and its multitude of blessings cannot be separated from the death of Christ. God's covenant salvation to His people is "through the BLOOD of the everlasting covenant." God who cannot lie promised eternal life to those He chose in Christ before the world began. This promise was based upon Christ's pledge to take upon Himself a body, come into the world, and suffer the just death of the cross that these sinners chosen in the covenant deserved. This He did and successfully certified every blessing on their behalf. God being the One who ordained this everlasting covenant of grace, also ordained that these chosen sinners should receive the knowledge of this salvation through the Gospel and receive them through faith. It is truly as Paul said in Romans 3:25, "faith in His blood." We believe on Christ who through His death ratifies the covenant and alone assures its every blessing to those who believe on Him. God grant us faith in Christ Jesus that we might be manifested as those whom God "hath blessed with all spiritual blessings" in Christ in that everlasting covenant of His grace.
