AND IT WAS NIGHT
John 13:13:30

"He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night."
–John 13:30

Sometimes the words of Scripture will literally grab hold of a man. These words, and it was night," got hold of me. When Judas went out, he really went out. He went out from the Savior never to return except as a diabolical wretch who would betray the Son of God with a kiss. "And it was night." Really night! The blackest of nights! For now his soul was set in animosity against the only One who can do sinners good.

How many men have come where the Savior is proclaimed, listened for awhile. and then have gone out? How many have I myself watched, of whom it must be said. "and it was night"? Oh, the night of eternal darkness is falling upon the souls of those who perish. This is real! If men want to play with this world, then play; but leave eternal things out of playing.

Religion makes a mockery of everything that is precious to the Almighty God. Men go out into the "night" without ever hearing of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Sinners come, hear the little essays of the money-grabbing preachers, and go immediately out; "and it was night."

The night is long and there will be many sighs and longings for the night to end, but always will these words ring out, "and it was night." Lord, use someone to warn of the might and cause sinners to take heed, even as you caused us to see Him who is the Morning Star who arose In our hearts (2 Peter 1: 19). "And it was night.
