Unbelievers are in a state of condemnation and very close to the eternal flame. Without Christ, you have no cause for happiness, and you must be born again before you'll ever understand. Believers, however, are totally safe and secure in our Lord Jesus. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:6)."
God our Father will chasten us according to His wisdom, love, and purpose. Yet, He will never take His love away. There was a prophet of God in I Kings 13 who came in the Word of the Lord and prophesied against a false altar. Yet, the prophet disobeyed and returned a way that our Lord had forbidden, and therefore he was slain. This is an example of God's jealousy for His gospel and the things that glorify our Lord Jesus Christ. Yet, when iniquity was charged upon the ungodly, this man of God was remembered among the saints. The bones of the false worshippers were dug up and laid upon the defiled altar because God remembers their sin even beyond the grave. Yet, when men came to the man of God's sepulcher, it is written, "… Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone [to escape]… (II King 23:18)." Likewise, every believer is secure like this man of God. In season, you will be chastened, but you have obtained a good burial. Through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, NONE of your sins are remembered.
He that began the work of salvation in you will finish it. Sometimes your boat may be exceedingly rocked, but God Almighty will bring every believer through the storm. Even while the disciples labored to save themselves and all the while they questioned the Son of God's care for them, He was upholding them and the storm. He upheld them so that they could never perish, and He upholds the storm to cast us upon Him (Mark 4:35-41).
It is not possible for God to start a work of grace in your soul, and then lose you before the finish line. He calculated everything that it would take to save you without any help from you whatsoever. He gave His Son to the cross, gave you to His Son, and has now given you His Son by the Holy Ghost. Stand fast in His blessed promise of grace when it appears that you cannot stop the bleeding of your wounds. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:6)."
