SUMMARY NOTES ON JEREMIAH 34:1-11
Jeremiah 34:1-11

Jim Byrd

These verses contain two messages which the LORD gave to Jeremiah.

1. The fate of the king, verses 1-7. Though Jerusalem would be captured by the Babylonians and king Zedekiah taken captive, he would not die a violent death. His end would come peacefully, and he would be honored by the people. Is not this the desire of each of us, to die in peace? We can only have peace with God through the glorious person and reconciling work of Jesus Christ.

2. The command to release the slaves, verses 8-11. God had established a covenant with Judah requiring them to free their servants after six years of servitude, which command the people disobeyed. The deliverance of the slaves was to remind Israel of their liberation from Egyptian captivity. The release typified the salvation of sinners. We were enslaved by sin and Satan, but effectual grace broke the fetters that bound us. The Lord freed us that we might believe and willingly serve Christ our Redeemer.
