A LETTER RESPONDING TO SOME QUESTIONS ON ASSURANCE

Heshimu Colar

Bro _ _ _,

The best thing that I can tell you is that we need to hear from God. He is utterly and absolutely faithful, but we need to be reminded and reminded of His sufficiency.

Having been in the conference this weekend, my own soul is hungrier for the Word than I can recently remember. I'm reminded of how much I need Him, how Big He is, and the absolute ability of all His sufficiency. When He speaks, there is a still small voice that proclaims peace to the sin-afflicted conscience. We recognize that although we deserve the harsh wind, the earthquake, and the fire, Jesus Christ died and we have peace (I Kings 19).

We are in ourselves worthless worms, totally incapable of any good thing. We are by necessity totally dependent upon God. And, we are blessed above all imagination to have a God that is not dependent upon us or bound by our sin. In Matt. 8, there is a leper. He comes to Christ saying, "Lord, if you wilt, thou canst make me clean." The religion of the beast, the lie of man-centeredness, is that God comes to the leper and falls upon His face saying, "Leper, if you will, if you do something, then I can..." This is a lie and utter blasphemy. God Almighty is never bound by man's sinfulness. He can forgive whom He wills whenever He wills. He can clothe us with the righteousness of Jesus Christ and give us absolute peace. And, though we are troubled by guilt, fear, and unbelief, Christ Jesus the Son of God does not wait upon us before He blesses us. He pronounced us blessed when He received us in the covenant of His love, He blessed us when He died for our sins, and He blesses us continually by the preached Word.

I am such an advocate for faithfully attending the gospel sound because I have felt the power in my own soul, and I continually experience it. It is under the preaching of the Word that God Almighty speaks. In Exodus 17, the elders of Israel represent God's believing people, as they go with God's prophet, in faith towards God, to see the miraculous outpouring of grace. They believed that God would bless them. Therefore, in obedience to Christ, they sought blessedness under His preached Word. Everyone who goes to hear the gospel in the hope of grace will hear.

So, hearing the preaching of the Word is the most important exhortation that I could give anyone seeking assurance or ANY spiritual thing. As I look upon church members who have persevered in this race and abundantly grown in Christ's sufficiency, they all abide faithfully under the Word preached. Christ Jesus ministers to them through His appointed ministry. They have exceeding trials, tribulations, doubts, and seasons of severe temptation to fall away, but in His due and perfect time, He always speaks.
