THE GIFT OF LIFE

Jim Byrd

It is a good thing to donate blood. Several of us have contributed that which the Red Cross calls the gift of life. What a wonderful benefit to a person in desperate need of this life sustaining fluid. Blood is so vital, continually circulating, carrying nourishment and oxygen to and bringing away waste products from all parts of the body. However, sometimes, maybe even many times, that person who receives the gift of life dies anyway. How sad and tragic. In such cases the gift of life was not sufficient to preserve life and the gift was, therefore, useless. All that the donor went through to give the blood was to no avail.

It is written in the Scriptures that the Lord Jesus Christ died and shed His blood for the remission of sins. His blood is, without question, THE GIFT OF LIFE. The shedding of His blood was vital. It satisfied divine justice; it put away sins, and answered all the demands of a broken law.

Yet, many tell us that the blood of Christ, though precious, may not result in life, that the sinner determines the effectiveness of the blood. These say that the blood that Jesus shed may or may not redeem and wash away sins, and that its saving and cleansing power is left up to the sinner and his free will. Such notions we absolutely reject as heresy! It cannot be that the precious blood of Christ would be shed for a sinner, and that sinner die in their sins. The blood of Christ secured the forgiveness and salvation of all for whom it was shed. Peter said, "Ye were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ." He didn't say, "Ye were redeemed if you allow it to redeem you…" When the Son of God died on the cross and shed His blood for the sins of His people, He gave THE GIFT OF LIFE. That blood will never lose its usefulness or effectiveness. All for whom it was shed shall LIVE FOREVER, unto the praise and glory of the Redeemer!
