HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE
John 3:16

Joe Terrell

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.–John 3:16

This verse has five verbs, all of which put the "amazing" in grace:

Loved! Some would occupy their time with determining who "the world" is, and it is sometimes necessary to do so. But the astounding fact is that God loved ANYBODY in this world. None but the God who IS love could ever love sinners such as us.

Gave! God did not make an offer but sent a gift; and what a gift it is! Paul says, "Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!" God gave nothing less than His own Son, and gave Him not only to be among us as a prophet and guide, but as a sacrifice, a propitiation sufficient to put away God's just wrath.

Believes! It is not "works," not "feels," but "believes." God has required of us nothing other than that we should believe His promise: "Abraham believed God and it was counted to Him as righteousness."

Not Perish! What a blessed negativity! All shall die, but not all shall perish. All shall experience the dissolution of this body, but he that believes in Christ shall never come into condemnation, never experience wrath, never go to hell.

Have Everlasting Life! Not just unending life as it now is, but eternal life. It is life, not only of unending duration, but of completely different character than the life we have naturally. It is spiritual life, the life that knows God and is suitable for being with Him. It is the present possession of every believer.
