No doubt sinners are confused. Why is this? Our text in verse 8 says, "because we have sinned against thee." Sin causes confusion. The minds of transgressors are in that state known as "mental instability." This "belongs" to us all. Of course, our Lord Jesus Christ has renewed our ability to see things in reality. We are "renewed in the spirit of our mind" (Eph. 4:23). still no one thinks rightly all the time, because of the corruption of our nature. There is not a reader of these words who would say you always have right thoughts, for if you do you prove your confusion.
If any are to recover from confusion, we must have that which "belongs" to the Lord our God. Mercy, Lord! May He come, and in that power which also belongs to Him, give us His tender mercies. I am glad the Mighty God can pity us. "The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy" James 5:1 1). When I think of my confusion of face that belongs to me, and then consider the mercies of the Lord our God that belongs to Him, it causes me to be as the Psalmist, Will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning" (Psa. 59:16). His mercy belongs to Him, so if we experience the reality of sins put away, it must be His sovereign gift; and His mercies reside in the blood of the Savior. "In whom we have redemption through his blood" (Col. 1: 1 4).
