WHAT IS THE USE IN PREACHING?

Jim Byrd

Some of the opponents of the gospel of God's sovereign grace have been known to ask, "If you believe some are chosen unto salvation, what is the use in preaching?" Far from making preaching useless, the sovereignty of God in salvation is the one thing that keeps preaching from being ineffective! Were it not for the fact that the Lord's will reigns supreme in salvation, the proclamation of the gospel would be the most futile effort, the most useless labor in the world! Such is the spiritual inability of sinners that none will, of their own initiative, believe this glorious message. The success of the gospel is not left to the discretion of man, and it is a good thing it isn't because nobody would ever be saved! Christ said that sinners will not and cannot come to Him for life (John 5:40; 6:44). Unless there is another factor in the situation, over and above our own endeavors and the sinner's inability, all of our efforts toward preaching the gospel will be unproductive. Thank God there is another factor: "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth!" The rule of God in the kingdom of grace means that when we preach the glorious gospel of Christ, the message will be successful and do its work in the hearts of those to whom it is sent (Isaiah 55: 10-11).
