BEING GLAD
Romans 16:19

Jack Shanks

"I am glad therefore on your behalf...."

We have the great privilege of telling the truth of the all-conquering Lord and Savior. Every time of late that I have done this, it was with my attention focused upon the sheep that had come for a feeding time John 21:15-17). They really ate with hunger and satisfaction and an interest that cannot be faked.

I said within myself, "Look at this." Then I had a gladness in my heart, not only for myself as God's spokesman, but for them as God's hearers. "I am glad therefore on your behalf." What an awful thing if they could not hear with spiritual ears and sat in an uninterested, muddled state of mind! Our Lord said, "Who hath ears to hear let him hear. Blessed are your ears, for they hear." (Matt. 13:9,16).

Thank His almighty grace, these sheep can hear. Consider the miracle of an old sinner who is deaf, mute, and blind to the truth of God suddenly sitting upright and hanging on every word that is said. Surely God has come. Surely the blessed teacher, the Spirit has come. "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of udgement" (John 16:8).

Paul, in Romans 16 is commending many of the saints. This is a good thing. Don't ever be so hyperspiritual that you are afraid to say to God's people, "Well done." And may I never get over the great gladness I feel in my heart at those who love the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
