FIRST SIN, FIRST GRACE!

Charles Pennington

Genesis chapter three gives us the account of the fall of man, where is described the entrance of sin and death into the world; the offense by which 'death reigned, by which 'judgment and condemnation came upon all men', and we all were 'made sinners' (Rom 5:12, 17-19). Immediately upon the entrance of sin was spiritual death manifested by guilt, fear and shame. The righteousness of innocence was replaced with the selfrighteousness of a fig leaf covering; instead of conimumon with God there was now 'hiding in the trees'. Judgment too was swift, condemning man and woman to sorrow, toil, death and separation. Yet, in all the Old Testament there is hardly a place where the grace of God is more clearly displayed than in this chapter. For, sin had barely done its awful work when God in grace appears on the scene; not in flaming swords of justice, but in ""the voice of ;the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day" (vs 8). The Word of God (Christ) came to where the sinner was. No sooner a lost sinner hiding from God, than a seeking Saviour, "Adam, where art thou?" (vs 9). Such is ever the way of God in grace; it is God coming to the sinner by the Word it is God calling the sinner, not the other way (Gal 1: 15 -16). Grace does not ignore sin, but brings it to light and confronts the sinner with his sin, "Hast thou eaten of the tree..?" (vs I 1). Grace proclaims the gospel of the glorious and victorious Redeemer who defeats sin, death and Satan, 'The Seed of Woman shall bruise the serpent's head' (vs 15). The way of redemption is set forth 'in picture (vs 21), whereby justice is honored and mercy is exercised (Rom 3:25-26); the shedding of blood (Heb. 9:22), the innocent suffering death for the guilty (I Pet 3:18), and a covering provided for their nakedness, (Rom 3:22). Nor is this all, for God 'in grace does not merely make this possible with the outcome in doubt or dependent on man's will, He accomplished it! The Lord God made the coats of skin and the Lord God clothed them!! When the prodigal son returned, the command of the father was not, "give him some clothes", it was, "bring forth the best robe and put it on him" (Lk 15:22). You see, sin by Satan made its entrance with all its inherent evil but God in grace claims the victory, for, "Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound"!
