PRESENT-DAY IDOLATRY
Psalm 115

Maurice Montgomery

The Psalmist says that the heathen gods or idols "are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: they have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: they have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat" (Vs. 4-7).

In reading the above description of worthless gods and idols, the contemporary mind in this country is apt to immediately lock in upon some backward, uncivilized, superstitious tribe in Africa or South America; but for those who have access to the Word of God, this ought not to be! To make such a quick and foolish judgment is to ignore the Word of God and the practice of idolatry all around us.

The Psalmist has very clearly set forth the gods of the majority of modern religion in our own country. He has described the superstition of our day. And that is not merely what I say, but the very thing which they glory in! "Our god," they say, "has no hands but our hands, no feet but our feet, no voice but our voice," etc.

My Brothers and Sisters, a false god is a false god, whether a figure setting visibly upon the worshipper's mantle or a lie lodged in his mind; whether a statue in some pagan shrine or merely misconceptions of God embraced in the heart. There is not a dime's worth of difference between civilized and uncivilized superstition, nor between civilized and uncivilized idolatry. An idol is an idol and idolatry is idolatry, whether in enlightened America or in the darkest and most remote corner of this earth. And all idolaters are, in the the strictest spiritual sense, heathen and pagan.

The Psalmist says, "But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased" (V-2). The only true and living God is exalted high above this earthly ball and all of its inhabitants (Isaiah 40).

He is absolutely sovereign, absolutely independent and free, and totally unhindered in all of His will and desire. "He is of one mind, and who can turn Him? and what His soul desireth, even that He doeth" (Job 23:13; Daniel 4:35; Isaiah 46:10; Ephesians 1:11). He not only has eyes and ears to see and hear, but He saw and heard it all before ever there was anything to see and hear (Psalm 139). He not only has feet and hands, but He goes where He pleases, does what He pleases, anytime He pleases. He not only has a mouth to speak and speaks when He pleases, to whom He pleases, but every word He speaks accomplishes exactly what He pleases (Isaiah 55:11). All who worship any other than THIS GOD are idolators!!!
