MOST TERRIBLE WORDS
Nahum 2:13

Jack Shanks

"Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of Hosts."

There are words that are devastating to man. People are told that their loved one has died or that they themselves have an incurable disease. These are certainly terrible words, but not the most terrible. The words that would turn me to a trembling heap of fear would be what the Almighty Lord said to Nineveh. "I am against thee." What! the Creator is against me? "Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things" (Isa. 40:26). Now brother, this is no small thing for HIM to be against me.

This is the lord of hosts who is against me. Who is this Lord of hosts? He is the only Redeemer of sinners. "As for our redeemer, the lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel." (Isa. 47:4). If I am not to suffer the awful penalty of sin, He must be FOR me, not against me.

Oh, tremble my soul!

This One who could be against me puts breath into my body moment by moment. "He that giveth breath unto the people on the earth" (Isa. 42:5). If you have ever experienced the taking away of this breath for a short time, you know its value. Early on a Sunday morning my breath was almost gone. Where did it go? He took it to teach me! Oh, for Him to be against me is indeed the worst of the worst.

The surest sign that the Lord is against a people is in our text in Nahum 2:13. "The voice of thy messengers will no more be heard." The gospel is gone! "They shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord, and shall not find it" (Amos 8:12). The word of the cross of Christ is life. If He withholds it, there is no hope. May He grant faith in the blood of His dear Son so that He will never say to me, "I am against thee."

Most Terrible Words!
