COMMUNICATING THE GOSPEL

Maurice Montgomery

God has given me the privilege of knowing many of you, enjoying your fellowship, and ministering to you for twenty five years. I think you realize that my preaching has always been sincere (I don't play with God), but you have seen my preaching change from a sort of theological meandering of doctrinal sermons to a constant diet of "Jesus Christ and Him crucified."

My friends, here I must stay, for this is no mere intellectual decision, but rather an attitude of heart and disposition of soul. This message (Christ) is what I MUST HAVE for the good of my own soul, and nothing else will do your soul and spirit any eternal good. Only in the gospel can we find the healing virtue, power, and comfort that sinners so desperately need.

Every time I preach to my family or yours, friends, neighbors, or an occasional visitor, it might very well be the last message they will ever hear. Therefore, I am constrained by the love of God, by love for the souls of men, and by the very spirit within me to preach Christ, Christ alone, and Christ always.

Brother and Sisters, some of you know (at least to some degree) the longing of my soul to communicate the beauties, the preciousness, and the glory of Christ to your souls and to those souls who are lost. The Christian's view of Christ, his esteem of Christ, and his joy and rejoicing in Christ is "unspeakable" (I Peter 1:8) and indescribable. While it is true that God uses men to proclaim the suitableness and sweetness of Christ, it is equally true that the Holy Spirit must REVEAL these things to men's souls. Let us pray - privately, together, and continually.
