WHAT IS YOUR DIET?

Charles Pennington

Over the years I have often heard people make this remark in reference to a good diet: "You are what you eat." Of course the meaning is that our diet has much to do with our physical condition. When applied to spiritual matters, the saying is absolutely true. John 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. The Lord Jesus Christ is soul food, served up in the gospel, at the table of grace. By faith we feed upon Him, His flesh and His blood; His person and work, His obedience, His sacrifice; John 6:54 " Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day". The Lord Jesus is the "True Bread', the only soul quickening, life sustaining food. Whatever else a person cats; though it be pleasant to the natural eye, sweet to the taste of the world and temporarily satisfying, it is poison to the soul. John 6:53, "Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Fxcept ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you ". As in the physical realm, eating is a daily thing. If a person eats only once, he will soon starve to death. If he eats only at long intervals, he will eventually grow weak, sickly and die. It is precisely so with spiritual food. Our Lord said, "he that eateth me, even he shall live by me;-- he that eateth of this bread shall live forever". (John 6:5758). The word 'eateth' is present tense. As at the family table, we assemble often to 'break the Bread of Life', to feed upon Christ, to drink the sincere milk of the Word. Feeding on Him is essential to life, health and strength.
