OLD NATURE

Maurice Montgomery

It is reported that Augustine used to pray, "Lord, deliver me from that evil man, myself" While I will not attempt to comment on Augustine's relationship with God, his prayer, whether expressed or not, lives in the heart of every man and woman who has been very long in the faith. True saving faith, unlike the faith of the majority of Baptists in our day, is an active, living faith. True faith does not walk an aisle and then quit, or make a decision and then become dormant. Saving faith is a struggle, a conflict, a battle, a warfare against all enemies of the soul, and the worst enemy is that old Adam nature, that nature which has such an affinity to everything evil and satanic and opposes God and good (Romans 7:7-25; Galatians 5:17). Through the light of the truth of God's Word we discover our darkness and ignorance, and through faith we see the natural unbelief of the heart. Men and women of faith dare not trust themselves. "Lord, deliver me from that evil man, myself."

"The one and only thing I have which I can truly call my own, my very own, mine alone, I long to give it up, to be without it, to be rid of it forever...I'm talking about my sin!"

Maurice Montgomery, Pastor
Bible Baptist Church
Madisonville, Ky.
