It first springs up in Him in the everlasting covenant before the world began. It rises to a fountain in Him when He becomes flesh and dwells among us. Then in His death as the Sacrifice and Substitute for sin on the cross, it swells up to become a well of living water. Jesus said to the woman at the well, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that Saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw." Then when a sinner hears the good news of the gospel and God regenerates him and reveals Christ in his heart, it increases to a great river. "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." But the infinite Christ, the water of life, continues to increase and becomes deeper and wider with each passing day in which the believer grows in the grace and knowledge of his Redeemer. On through eternity it continues and increases to the delight and security of all who drink of it. John declared in the Revelation. "And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." David says of the righteous, "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." "There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. (Psa. 46:4) Christ the Rock, smitten of God, became the fountain of life to all who drink. "He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river." (Psa. 105:41) Are you thirsty for that which satisfies both God and the soul? Jesus said, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink."
