THE SALVATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS

Joe Terrell

The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; He is their stronghold in times of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them because they take refuge in Him. (Psalm 37:39,40)

From Scriptures, we know that the "righteous" are those who have believed God, as it is written, "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness." These righteous ones are known by this: in times of trouble, God is their stronghold; and they are known to take refuge in Him.

For the believer, God is his hope in all things. A believer may use the means that God has ordained for relief of his troubles, but God is still his hope. When sick, a believer may go to the doctor, but God is his refuge and hope for healing. When poor, he may seek a job; but he yet trusts God for His daily bread. In times of trial, he may find comfort in the company of brothers and sisters in Christ, but it is God in Whom he take refuge.

For such a one there is a great promise, "The Lord helps them and delivers them." He helps them in the midst of their distress by keeping them safe from eternal harm, sustaining their faith even when they feel they have none, preventing them from leaving Him, and giving them strength to endure the trouble. Then, when it is time, He delivers them from their trouble; actually pulls them out of it. Indeed, the salvation of the righteous; both their eternal salvation and their temporal deliverances comes from the Lord.
