IN REMBERANCE OF CHRIST

Don Fortner
See the table spread before you,
See the feast of bread and wine:
These are symbols of our Savior,
Tokens of His love divine.
Bread that's broken is His body,
Crushed beneath the wrath of God:
Wine poured out is a reminder
Of our Savior's precious blood.

Children of our God remember
How He bought your soul and mine:
In remembrance of our Savior,
Eat the bread and drink the wine.
Jesus came the God incarnate,
To fulfill God's holy law:
On the cross He made atonement,
And retrieved us from the fall.

Let us ne'er forget the promise
Jesus made to come again:
Soon He comes, our King to call us
Home to glory-Praise His name!
With this hope and expectation,
We rejoice to keep this feast,
Celebrating our redemption,
Till we lean on Jesus' breast.

(Tune: Brethren, We Have Met to Worship)
87.87. Double

GOD, BE MERCIFUL TO ME

Don Fortner
Dear Lord, I now confess my sin,
My shame and guilt I own: Behold,
I'm a vile wretch unclean,
Who bows before Your throne!

O God, be merciful to me,
And all my sin forgive:
The merits of Your Son I plead:
In Him, oh may I live?

If You should mark my sin,
O Lord, And sentence me to hell,
Against Your justice, not a word
My sinful heart could tell.

But if You will accept the blood
Of Jesus for my shame,
Surely Your grace would be,
O God, Honoring to Your name.

Guilty and helpless, I believe
The gospel promise, Lord:
I trust Your Son, my Lord receive,
And take You at Your word.

Believing on the Lamb of God,
His blood and righteousness
Shall ease me of my awful load,
And give my conscience peace.

(Tune: Walk in the Light)
Common Meter 86.86.

COVENANT LOVE

Don Fortner
Behold, my soul, the love of God!
Behold the grace most free!
Before all worlds His purpose stood,
His heart was flxed on me!

Elected by eternal love,
The covenant firm and sure,
The Triune God agreed in love
Salvation to secure.

My soul was given to the Son,
He promised to redeem;
By blood and righteousness,
His own, He would my soul reclaim.

In the due time Immanuel came,
To live and die for me:
He lives today and bears my name;
Christ is my Surety!

In love He sent His Spirit down,
Who gave me life and grace:
He drew me and I followed on
My Saviour to embrace.

Now I rejoice in covenant love,
Amazing grace I sing:
I now am conquered by His love.
My Savior is my King!

(Tune: The Lord's My Shepherd)
Common Meter 86.86.

APPROACH, MY SOUL, THE THRONE OF GRACE

Don Fortner
Approach, my soul, the throne of grace
In every time of need;
There's mercy for the needy one,
Who Jesus' name shall plead.

Though I'm a weak and sinful wretch,
I will approach the throne
I'll lean upon Christ's mighty arm,
And plead His blood alone.

The blood! The precious blood of Christ!
Has opened up the way
By which I can draw near to God,
And to my Father pray.

Though Satan tempts my heart to sin,
I'll call upon my God;
And if I fall, He'll lift me up,
And cleanse me in the blood.

The way is open, God will hear
My groans and cries of grief,
Nothing can keep me from from His throne,
But my own unbelief.

Oh, Lord, my unbelief remove,
And turn my heart by grace:
Compel me to approach Your throne,
And there spread out my case.

(Tune: O For a Thousand Tongues)
Common Meter 86.86.

(5)

LONGING TO BE LIKE CHRIST

Don Fortner
Grace has inspired a great desire
Within my heart to be
Conformed to Christ, my blessed Lord,
In His humanity.

This great desire I seek, I know,
Cannot be here performed:
My sinful flesh forbids such hope,
While living in this form.

Still I must strive to be like Christ,
Who lived and died for me:
The law that motivates my heart,
My Rule of life is He.

His boldness in His Father's cause,
Submission to His will,
His life of love and purity,
Is my example still.

So, Savior, intercede for me,
And by Your Spirit's pow'r
Cause me to follow in Your steps
Until my dying hour.

Then I shall drop this robe of flesh,
And rise to meet my God:
Freed from all sin and perfect then,
I'll be like Christ my God!

(Tune: Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?)
Common Meter 86.86.

(6)

BEHOLD THE SAVIOR

Don Fortner
Behold, He came, our Savior God!
He came to save His own:
By His own blood and righteousness,
The work was fully done.

Behold, He died, the Substitute!
He bore the wrath of God:
The sword of justice and of wrath
Was drowned in Jesus'blood.

Behold, He rose, He rose for us!
Triumphant o'er the grave:
Freed from our sins, He lives above,
The risen Christ can save.

Behold, He saves! Yes, Jesus saves!
Sinner, there's hope for you:
Come, trust His blood and righteousness,
Believe, and He'll save you.

Behold, He reigns! The God-man reigns!
He reigns as sov'reign Lord:
All creatures soon must bow and say,
That Jesus Christ is Lord!

Behold, He comes again: Rejoice!
Let ransomed sinners sing:
We'll see that One who died for us
We soon shall see our King!

(Tune: America the Beautiful)
Common Meter 86.86

THE PRECIOUS THINGS OF HEAVEN

Don Fortner
Our God, in cov'nant mercy, gives
"The precious things of heav'n"
To all His loved and chosen ones,
The heirs of grace and heav'n.

Salvation's sure foundation Stone
Is laid in heav'n for us:
Unto you therefore which believe
Christ Jesus is precious.

The precious blood of Christ was shed,
Redeeming us from sin:
Applied by grace, it's precious blood,
We've felt its pow'r within.

Like precious faith with God's elect,
We have by grace received:
The Spirit's pow'r, revealing Christ,
Called us, and we believed.

The precious promises of God
Are given unto us:
In Christ the promises are sure,
Sure as God's truthfulness.

Even the trial of our faith"
Is a most precious thing:
It shall be found a cause for praise
To honor Christ our King.

(Tune: Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee)
Common Meter 86.86.

(8)

BLESSING FOR BLESSING

Don Fortner
Blessed is the man, O Lord,
Who was chosen by Your grace:
Your election and Your love
Cause our hearts to sing Your praise.
Cause our hearts to sing Your praise.

God of love, You sent Your Son
To redeem Your chosen ones!
Precious Savior! Precious blood!
For our sin Your blood atones!
For our sin Your blood atones!

When the time of love has come
God the Spirit comes to some:
By grace we cannot resist,
God's elect are caused to come.
God's elect are caused to come.

Come to Jesus? Yes, we do,
Come to Christ alone for grace;
By God's sov'reign grace and power,
We the Son of God embrace!
We the Son of God embrace!

Blessed Father, blessed Son,
Blessed Spirit, three in One,
We for grace our praise return–
Thank You, Lord, for all You've done!
Thank You, Lord, for all You've done!

(Tune: Take My Life and Let It Be)
77.77.

(9)

ANOTHER YEAR

Don Fortner
Our heav'nly Father, God of love,
Your kindness and Your grace we prove;
Our praise accept and bless us here,
As we conclude another year.

We praise You for Your providence,
You've been our Shield and our Defense:
And by Your constant, gracious care
We've been preserved another year.

By Your Spirit and Your pow'r
We've enjoyed the heav'nly show'r:
Christ Jesus did Himself appear
Among His saints another year.

We here resign our souls, our all,
Be pleased to take and use us all,
And grant that in Your love and fear
We may begin another year.

Let us Your grace experience still,
To walk according to Your will,
To live by faith in love sincere,
As we begin another year.

Lord, hold us in the living way,
And when You call us in death's day,
We'll gladly part with all that's here,
Nor wish on earth another year.

(Tune: I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day)
Long Meter 88.88.

(10)

"SHOW ME THY GLORY"

Don Fortner
O Lord, my God, in mercy hear
O My soul's most earnest plea,
In everything and everywhere,
Lord, "Show me Thy glory."

Your grace and goodness, Lord, to men,
In all Your sovereignty,
Your jusfice and Your mercy too,
Lord, "Show me Thy glory."

Your pow'r and Your wisdom, Lord,
Your handiwork display–
Creation holds my mind in awe:
Lord, "Show me Thy glory."

In all Your works of providence,
In everything, I see
The hand of my great, sovereign God:
Lord, "Show me Thy glory."

In the cleft of the Rock I stand,
Where mercy has put me:
Now, covered with Your hand, I see,
Lord, I see Your glory.

Yet, still I hope for better sight,
When risen in that day:
Then face to face with Jesus Christ,
Lord, "Show me Thy glory!"

(Tune: According to my Gracious Word)
Common Meter 86.86.

(11)

MY SOUL, THIS WORLD IS NOT FOR YOU

Don Fortner
My soul, awake, and see the light:
This world with all its vain delight,
The things I see and touch today,
These things of time must pass away.

(Refrain)
Let worldly minds the world pursue,
My soul, this world is not for you.
My soul, this world is not for you.

The riches and the cares of earth,
Which seem to be of such great worth,
The things which others seek and serve,
I cannot seek and must not serve.

What shall it profit me to gain
The world, and all its wealth retain?
Immortal soul of mine, awake!
For Christ, the world I must forsake.

I've seen the Son of God revealed,
And by His grace I am compelled:
His grace and glory charm my heart,
For Christ, I bid this world depart.

Savior, I would be Thine alone,
If such a worthless worm You'll own:
For grace so boundless, love so free,
I give myself, O Christ, to Thee!

(Tune: The Solid Rock)
Long Meter with Refrain 88.88.

(12)

THE DEBT OF LOVE

Don Fortner
Come, every sinner saved by grace,
You who by faith God's Son embrace,
Tell all who hear your voice below,
The debt of love to Christ you owe.

(Refrain)
Dear Lord, I lift my praise to Thee;
All that I am, or hope to be,
I owe alone, O Christ, to Thee.

He left His Father's throne above,
And came to earth on wings of love:
For us He lived the perfect Man,
And so fulfilled the law's demand.

Jesus endured His Father's ire,
And died at the appointed hour:
What He endured no tongue can tell,
To save our souls from death and hell.

From death's dark grave our King arose,
And triumphed over all our foes;
Up through the skies the Victor rode,
And reigns on high, our Savior God.

From heaven Christ will quickly come
And bring His ransomed people home:
There we shall see His lovely face
And chant the praises of His grace.

(Tune: The Solid Rock)
Long Meter with Refrain 88.88.

(13)

ALL THINGS TOGETHER WORK FOR GOD

Don Fortner
All things together work for good
By God's all wise design
To those who love their sovereign Lord,
The called by grace Divine–
The called by grace Divine.

My God, before the world was made,
Predestinated all,
And nothing happens in this world
Beyond my God's control–
Beyond my God's control.

He chose me in etemal love,
Redeemed me by His blood,
He called me and He gave me life
And He will do me good–
And He will do me good.

My God, I trust Your providence,
Your will, not mine, be done:
Content, I wait to see Your grace,
And bow before Your throne–
And bow before Your throne.

My life, my all, I now resign
To You, my Lord and God,
Nothing I ask or seek except
The glory of my God–
The glory of my God.

(Tune: Majestic Sweetness)
Common Meter 86.86.

(14)

GOD HAS SAVED ME, I WILL PRAISE HIM

Don Fortner
Depraved in heart, in thought, in deed,
I could not cease from sin:
A fallen wretch of Adam's seed,
My will was bound by sin.

(Refrain)
Not by my works, nor by my will,
But by grace alone,
God has saved me, I will praise Him,
Praise my God alone!

My God, in love, eternal love,
Elected me to live
And I to God, for His free grace,
Will all the glory give.

In die due time, God sent His Son
To die for His elect:
Christ's blood has full atonement made–
He fully paid my debt!

In time the Holy Spirit came
And called me by the Word;
By grace that I could not resist,
He drew me to my Lord.

Now I'm secure in Christ's own hands,
I'm kept by sov'reign grace:
Believing Him, I'll persevere,
And ever give Him praise.

(Tune: Only Trust Him)
Common Meter With Refrain 86.86.

(15)

IN CHRIST THE LAW IS MAGNIFIED

Don Fortner
The Jews of old their sabbaths kept,
A picture of that rest
Which sinners find in Christ, who said,
"Come unto me and rest"

(Refrain)
Look to Jesus, He has finished
All the law required:
Glory, glory, Christ has finished
All the law required!

Under the law they sacrificed
The blood of helpless lambs,
Pictures of Christ, the Lamb of God,
Who took away our sins.

By tithes those ancient ones confessed
That they belonged to God:
By willing faith we consecrate
Our all to Christ our God.

Helpless, we never could obey
T'he law's righteous commands;
But Jesus lived and died for us,
And met its just demands.

God's holy law points us to Christ,
Who fulfilled its designs:
In Christ the law is magnified–
In Him its glory shines!

(Tune: Only Trust Him)
Common Meter With Refrain 86.86.

(16)

GOD'S ELECT ARE KEPT SECURE

Don Fortner
Christ the Lamb was foreordained,
And before all time was slain:
In God's purpose Christ the Lamb
Stood for us, and we in Him.

(Refrain)
God's elect are kept secure,
To the end we shall endure;
By His pow'r and by His grace
God preserves His chosen race!

Though we fell with Adam's race,
God's elect are kept by grace,
Kept alive until they're called,
One by one, to Jesus called.

In the fullness of God's time,
Christ bought us by blood Divine,
God the Spirit calls His own
And preserves them everyone.

Though trials come and Satan roar
And temptations press us sore,
Though we often, often sin,
Still God's grace remains within.

Blessed, blessed is the man
To whom God will not charge sin!
Chosen and preserved by grace,
This poor sinner sings God's praise!

(Tune: Trusting Jesus)
77.77. Double

(17)

JEHOVAH REIGNS!

Don Fortner
Jehovah reigns! Rejoice, rejoice,
God sits upon His throne!
With fear and trembling hear His voice,
His purpose shall be done.

(Refrain)
Jehovah, sov'reign Savior,
Our everlasting King,
We gladly bow before You:
Your praises we will sing.

"What I have spoken, I will do,
My purposes shall stand;
And to my cov'nant I'll be true,
None can restrain My hand."

In heav'n above God has His way,
And in the earth below:
Both men and demons He will sway
To do His will, I know.

In glorious, sov'reign majesty,
Our God performs His will:
His purpose from etemity,
He must and will fulfill.

An everlasting glorious name,
God for Himself shall have:
Creation shall proclaim His fame
God shall all glory have!

(Tune: Near to the Heart of God)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(18)

THE BIBLE IS A BOOK OF CHRIST

Don Fortner
God gave His holy, inspired Word
For only one great end,
The prophets and apostles too
Reveal the sinner's Friend.

(Refrain)
The Bible is a Book of Christ,
It only speaks of Him:
On every page it shows us Christ,
It only speaks of Him.

The prophecies of old record
God's wondrous, mighty deeds:
Those deeds of power and of grace
Set forth the woman's Seed.

The prophets all reveal our Lord,
As Prophet, Priest and King:
The types the great redemption show,
Christ's blood and grace now bring.

"Behold the Lamb!" the Baptist said,
The sin-atoning One:
As it was promised long before,
God's Son as man has come!

Our Substitute obeyed the law,
Then died and rose again:
And in His Word our Savior said,
"Rejoice! I come again!"

(Tune: My Faith Has Found a Resting Place)
Common Meter with Refrain 86.86.D

(19)

WHO IS A GOD LIKE UNTO THEE?

Don Fortner
Who is a God like unto Thee,
That pardoneth iniquity?"
Jehovah, God, the great I AM,
Forgives our sins through Christ the Lamb?

(Refrain)
"Who is a God like unto Thee,
T'hat pardoneth iniquity?"
His anger He retains no more!
His grace and mercy shall endure!

The God of truth must punish sin;
But in His love He formed a plan,
To satisfy the law's demands
For sinners num'rous as the sands.

Behold His love and compassion
In the death of Christ His Son!
The precious sin-atoning blood
Reveals the love and truth of God.

He passes by the transgressions
Of all His loved and chosen ones:
In mercy God delights, we see–
He cast our sins into the sea!

None can with our great God compare,
He gave His Son, sinners to spare:
His anger He retains no more,
Christ died, and God requires no more.

(Tune: And Can It Be?)
Long Meter Double 88.88 D

(20)

CHRIST IS ALL

Don Fortner
In Christ, in Christ alone,
My soul has found sweet rest;
By grace He takes me for His own,
And does for me what's best.

(Refrain)
Christ is all in all!
Christ is all to me–
Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
Is all, yes, all to me.

On Christ I cast my care
And trust His providence;
His sov'reign throne forbids my fear
His presence gives me peace.

While living in this world,
O Lord, help me to see,
All things now seen within this world
Soon, soon must pass away.

There is an aching place
Within my heart, dear Lord–
I long to see the blessed face
Of Christ, my gracious Lord.

In life, I'll look to Christ,
In death, I'll wait His call,
In heaven I only hope for Christ,
Who is my all in all.

(Tune: Grace, 'Tis a Charming Sound)
Shon Meter with Refrain 66.86.

(21)

GREAT GOD OF SOVEREIGN GRACE, WE BOW

Don Fortner
God sits upon His throne by right,
Sov'reign over all things;
We gladly own His right to rule
And of His greatness sing.

(Refrain)
Great God, our heav'nly Father,
We praise You for Your grace;
We trust Your Son, our Savior,
By whom we have all grace.

God, in His sovereign majesty,
Appointed Christ to save,
And every blessing of His grace
To us in Christ He gave.

According to His purposed grace
Toward His chosen race,
Our God predestined everything
To save us by His grace.

From everlasting our God rules
In matchless sovereignty,
Always performing all His will
And His all wise decree.

Great God of sovereign grace, we bow
Before Your glorious throne:
We praise You for Your gracious will
To save us by Your Son!

(Tune: Near to the Heart of God)
Common Meter With Refrain 86.86.

(22)

JESUS ONLY

Don Fortner
Jesus only is my Savior,
Jesus only will I praise:
Trusting Him, I need no other,
Trusting Him, I have all grace.

(Refrain)
Jesus is my God and Savior,
Jesus saves me by His grace:
Jesus only, Jesus only,
Jesus only will I praise!

Jesus only represents me,
He's the Lord, my Righteousness!
His obedience, perfect, holy,
Is before my God my dress.

Jesus only died at Calvary
Bearing all my guilt and sin:
Precious blood, He shed so freely,
Has atoned for all my sin!

Jesus only rules in heaven,
There for me He intercedes:
By His blood I am forgiven,
And for me His blood He pleads.

Jesus only, King of glory,
Soon will come to call me home:
I will see Him, Jesus only!
When I reach my heav'nly home.

(Tune: Our Great Savior)
87.87. Trodiaic with Refrain

(23)

PRAISE FOR THE BIRTH OF CHRIST

Don Fortner
Christ, the Lord, has come to earth
See the wonder of His birth–
He who is the mighty God
Takes upon Him flesh and blood!
Angels wonder and adore
As they watch their humbled Lord;
Fallen man He came to heal,
His Father's purpose to fulfill.
Praise the Lord throughout the earth,
Praise Him for His gracious birth!

Proclaim on earth God's wondrous plan,
Now there's hope for ruined man:
God's righteous law He obeyed,
Living as our rightful Head;
For our sin atonement made,
With His blood, the price He paid–
Justice now is satisfied,
God and man are reconciled!
For His life and for His death,
Praise the Lord our Righteousness.

Now He reigns, our glorious King,
All His ransomed ones to bring
To Him in faith and righteousness,
Grace and mercy, perfect peace.
Soon our Lord will come again;
We with Him on high shall reign–
We will see the God-man here
And eternal glory share!
Praise our Savior and our King,
Praise Him for His glorious reign!

(Tune: Hark! the Herald Angels Sing)
77.77. Double with Refrain

(24)

JESUS SAVES FROM DEATH AND HELL

Don Fortner
Born in sin, I chose the path
That would bring eternal death:
Long I walked the rebel's way
'Til grace stopped me in my way–
Now this sinner lives to tell,
Jesus saves from death and hell!

God revealed His Son in me,
By His Spirit, set me free!
By almighty grace I'm free
From all guilt and sin I'm free!
And this sinner lovcs to tell,
Jesus saves from sin and hell!

Jesus, Jesus crucified!
Jesus once for sinners died!
Now His blood, by grace applied,
Tells me I am justified!
Hear this word of grace I tell,
Jesus saved my soul from hell!

Though I'm full of sin, I know,
Jesus will not let me go.
Though I fall, (and oft I do!)
Grace restores, and I tell you–
Jesus, who saves me from hell,
Can by grace save you as well!

Look to Jesus, look and live!
He will free salvation give!
Trust His blood and righteousness,
And you have His saving grace!
Hear the good news, hear it well–
Sinners Jesus saves from hell!

(Tune: Rock of Ages)
77.77.77

(25)

SAVIOR, BIND MY HEART TO YOU

Don Fortner
Savior, bind my heart to You,
Guide my steps in all I do;
BY Your grace, and pow'r and love
Fix my heart on things above:
Give me grace to honor You;
Savior, bind my heart to You.

Lord, my sinful flesh is weak
And opposed to all I seek,
Things I would I cannot do,
What I hate is what I do!
Jesus, I would follow You;
Savior, bind my heart to You.

While I walk this pilgrim way,
Jesus, ever near me stay;
Hold me, lest I fall in sin;
When I do, restore again:
Lift me up and make me true;
Savior, bind my heart to You.

If my days on earth be long,
Give me grace and make me strong:
Hold me, Christ, and I shall stand,
Safe, secure within Your hand:
If my days be long or few,
Savior, bind my heart to You.

How long, O Lord, must I toil,
Till this flesh returns to soil,
Till I leave this world of sin
And Your glory enter in?
Lord, I long to be with You!
Savior, bring me home to You!

(Tune: Rock of Ages)
77.77.77.

(26)

HOW CAN I BE JUST WITH GOD?

Don Fortner
"The soul that sins, it shall die!"
Word from God, Who cannot lie.
Justice cried against my soul,
Law required eternal woe!
Teffors from God's law that fell,
Crushed my heart with thoughts of hell.

Righteousness I cannot give,
Less than that God won't receive.
How can I be just with God?
Can He save and yet be God?
Can He pardon all my sin?
Can He cleanse my heart within?

Yes, oh blessed word of grace,
Christ brings hope to Adam's race
He obeyed the law of God,
And poured out His life in blood:
God in justice looks on Him
And forgives His people's sin.

Jesus died for sinner's sake;
Now, as such, my place I take:
Trusting Him, I cannot die,
God has sworn, and cannot lie:
By Your cross, O Christ, the Lamb,
Free from sin and guilt I am.

Christ has full atonement made,
Now my debt is fully paid!
I will sing of grace most free,
Justice satisfied for me!
At the throne of God above,
I will sing redeeming love!

(Tune: Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me)
77.77.77.

(27)

PLEADING FOR GRACE

Don Fortner
Sovereign Ruler, Lord of all,
Prostrate at Your feet I fall.
You are holy, wise and just;
I'm a creature of the dust.
All things move at Your command,
Governed by Your mighty hand.

Heaven, earth and hell I see,
Fulfill all Your wise decree.
Dares a man resist his Lord,
Stand against the sovereign God?
I will bow before Your throne
Seeking grace in Christ, Your Son.

Through His blood and righteousness,
Lord, I plead with You for grace–
If You will, You can, I know,
Grace and mercy to me show.
Will You, Lord, my soul forgive,
Grant this sinner grace to live?

I've no other hope but this–
Jesus' blood and righteousness.
Now I'm conquered by Your grace.
In the dust I hidc my face.
Give me Christ, or else I die!
I upon Your grace rely.

Oh, for mercy, now I plead,
Grant me, Lord, the grace I need.
Turn, O turn, to me and say–
"All your sins are washed away:
In My Son your debt is paid,
He for you the ransom made!"

(Tune: Rock of Ages)
77.77.77.

(28)

ETERNAL BLOOD! ETERNAL LAMB!

Don Fortner
Behold, the Lamb of God was slain
By God's own wise decree:
The blood of Christ has stood for me
From all etemity!
God's wrath could not destroy the world,
Though Adam fell in sin,
Because the Lamb was slain for man
Before the world began.

Then at the time ordained by God
The Lamb poured out His blood,
For all the world of His elect,
And paid the debt we owed!
Dear Lamb of God, Your precious blood
Has ransomed me from death;
And I will praise You for that blood
As long as I have breath.

Though Satan rage against my soul,
Though I am full of sin,
I trust Christ's sin-atoning blood–
It gives me peace within.
That blood is my security;
(Christ must be satisfied!)
Not one can ever be condemned
For whom the Lamb has died!

When I have dropped this robe of flesh
And enter heaven's bliss,
The Lamb who has been slain for me,
I shall forever bless!
Eternal blood! Eternal Lamb!
Eternal God, my King!
A worthless sinner saved by grace,
I owe You everything!

(Tune: America the Beautiful)

IN REMBERANCE OF CHRIST

Don Fortner
Lord Jesus, Savior, God above
My heart and voice I raise,
To praise You for Your matchless love
And for Your sov'reign grace!
Before all worlds, in covenant grace,
You set Your heart on me,
Made me a vessel of Your grace,
And resolved to save me!

Descending from Your throne on high,
With men You came to dwell,
That as my Surety You might die,
To save my soul from hell!
In shame and agony You died,
Beneath the wrath of God;
In my place You were crucified:
You bought me with Your blood.

Exalted to Your heav'nly throne,
You rule over all flesh:
In love for me, Your chosen one,
You rule in providence,
And in the time of love You came
And spread Your skirt o'er me;
Savior Divine, You spoke my name
And caused me to believe!

Now what I am I owe to You:
I'm saved by sov'reign grace!
Jesus, my Savior, I'll praise You
And magnify Your grace!
Lord, when I reach my home above
And see You face to face–
Then perfectly I'll praise Your love,
And still adore Your grace.

WORTHY IS THE LAMB

Don Fortner
Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain,
His blood can never fail:
The conquering Lion of Judah came,
And over all prevails.

(Chorus)
Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb,
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!
All praise to the Lamb, all praise to the Lamb,
All praise to the Lamb who was slain!

Dear Lamb of God, You took our sins
And made them all Your own!
Your blood You shed, Your life You gave,
To bring us to Your throne!

That precious blood, we know, was not
For sinners shed in vain:
Not one of those can ever die
For whom the Lamb was slain.

This Lamb who died, He is a Lion,
Whose will is always done:
He conquered Satan, death and hell,
And then He claimed His throne.

The Lion rules to save His own,
His chosen, ransomed race:
He conquers and subdues their wills
By matchless sov'reign grace!

Did Jesus rise, the Lamb of God,
And take His rightful place?
So surely shall His ransomed ones
In heaven find their place!

MY CONSCIENCE NOW IS FREE AND CLEAR

Don Fortner
Guilty, oppressed and vexed with sin,
My fear no words could tell;
God's law my soul in terror held
And threatened me with hell!
I tried, but found I could not do
One thing pleasing to God:
Neither my works nor all my prayers
Could ease me of my load.

I sank in deep despair and felt
That I would surely die:
"No hope for me, I'm lost, undone!"
My soul began to cry.
But then I heard the Savior say,
"Look unto Me and live,
My blood has full atonement made,
I can salvation give."

When Christ revealed Himself to me,
I looked, and I believed;
And trusting Him alone I have
Salvation now received!
My conscience now is free and clear,
And it condemns me not!
The precious blood of Jesus Christ
My sin has blotted out!

My sins are gone! My sins are gone!
Christ washed them all away!
He satisfied my awful debt,
There's nothing left to pay!
Now this is all my hope and peace,
And my security:
Christ Jesus lived in righteousness
And shed His blood for me!

SOVEREIGN GRACE ACKNOWLEDGED

Don Fortner
The Lord our God is sov'reign and
The rules with perfect ease:
In heav'n above and earth below
He works His wise decrees:
The angels swiftly do His will,
And they with willing minds;
But Satan, men and demons, too
Accomplish God's designs.

All things that ever come to pass
God foreordained to be,
And all He rules, or overrules,
To get Himself glory:
God's even chosen to redeem
And save some of our race,
Though we are sinful, wretched worms,
To magnify His grace.

God's grace comes not by man's "free-will,"
Nor by his legal works:
God gives His grace to whom He will,
And His salvation works:
We all deserve eternal wrath,
And some God does pass by;
But some He has decreed to save,
And they shall never die!

Great God, we praise You for Your grace
And for Your sovereignty:
You chose us and redeemed us, too,
And You have set us free!
Great Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
The triune God we praise!
We, for the glory of Your grace,
Give You alone all praise.

A PRODIGAL, I WANDERED FAR

Don Fortner
A prodigal, I wandered far,
Wasting my life in sin and shame
Until, at last, I was outcast
With no one but myself to blame:
Though the wanderer's path was hard,
I had a rebel's will to roam:
Though sin brought pain and misery,
I had no thought of coming home.

I tried in vain to change my ways,
Not knowing that my heart was wrong:
My righteous works were husks for swine;
They did not satisfy me long:
At last, I sunk in deep despair,
There in my filth and sin I lie:
The prodigal had nothing left–
I thought that I would surely die!

But grace had marked the time and place
Beyond which I could never go:
Grace stripped me, and grace brought me down,
Though then God's grace I did not know:
Grace forced me to my Father's house,
And made me willing to come home:
I knew not what awaited me,
But I arose and headed home.

Behold, my Father rose and ran,
And fell upon my filthy neck!
He kissed me and kissed me again,
And said, "Welcome, son, welcome back!"
The Lamb was sacrificed for me!
Christ's spotless robe is now my dress!
The ring of covenant love I wear!
This prodigal is saved by grace!

I BELONG TO CHRIST MY GOD

Don Fortner
Chosen in eternal love
By my God, Who reigns above, (Blood of the incarnate God!)
I belong to Christ my God.

Born again by grace Divine,
Called by pow'r in God's own time,
God the Spirit gave me faith
And delivered me from death:
I now live in Christ my God.

By profession I have said,
"Jesus is my sov'reign Head:
All I am and own I bring
Under rule to Christ my King:
I submit to Christ my God."

Chosen and redeemed and called,
Let no fear my heart intrude:
Christ will feed and clothe His own,
And protect me by His throne:
I will trust Him, Christ my God.

Savior, let me live on earth
To proclaim Your matchless worth:
In body and spirit, Lord,
I would glorify my God:
I will live for Christ my God.

Though my sinful flesh rebel,
Force me, Lord, to do Your will:
When my work on earth is done,
Bring me safely to Your throne:
I will see my Christ, my God!

SINNERS SAVED BY GRACE

Don Fortner
Let sinners saved by grace
Their songs to Jesus raise:
Our sins by blood He did erase,
And we will sing His praise!
Our Savior gave us life
And He has faithful been,
Preserving us amid all strife
His daily grace we've seen!

Though in our sin we lay,
Lost, helpless and defiled,
God's love and grace had fixed the day
We must be reconciled:
He would not let us die,
T'hough we despised His name:
Kept as the apple of His eye,
His love remained the same.

And though we wandered on
In sin from place to place,
Our steps Christ ordered from His throne:
He saved us by His grace!
Now, though we're weak and frail,
And prone to every sin,
Our Savior's grace and pow'r prevail,
And we're secure in Him.

Christ, Who chose us in love,
And bought us with His blood,
Reigns as our Surety above,
And He will do us good:
He will not leave His own,
Nor let His own leave Him:
Our Lord will bring us to His throne
To ever be with Him!
