BEHOLD THE GOOD SHEPARD

Don Fortner
Behold the good Shepherd, Who died for His sheep,
The sheep He has purchased, the Shepherd will keep:
He promised His Father, (die number untold!)
He would bring all safely into His own fold.

Now for His own honor the Shepherd will search,
Unfil He finds His sheep, scattered o'er all earth;
And when He has found them, He calls them by name:
By saving His lost ones, the Shepherd wins fame.

I am one of Christ's sheep, weak, helpless and frail,
But Christ is my Shepherd, and He cannot fail:
The hand that has saved me, holds me in His grace;
No Power can harm me, or break His embrace.

Christ Jesus shall bring all His sheep safely home:
Not one shall be missing, no, not even one:
Then gathered in heaven, the Shepherd and sheep,
Christ will then say, "Father, here are all Our sheep!"

(Tune: Take Time to be Holy)
Double Amphibrachic 65.65.

IN JESUS WE ARE FREE

Don Fortner
Free from the law's great curse,
In Jesus we are free:
For Christ became a curse for us
And died upon the tree.
The rituals of the law
And all the law's commands
Have been fulfilled in Christ the Lord,
Established by His hands.

No cov'nant with the law
Can now with us exist:
Complete in Christ we stand by grace,
Both free and ever blessed.
No more the dread of wrath,
No more constrained by fear,
We worship and we serve our God
With gratitude and cheer.

In Jesus we are free,
In Jesus we are free-
Free from all sin and from all guilt,
We live in liberty!
We'll join the happy song,
With all the blood-bought throng,
And sing the praises of the Lamb,
Whose grace makes us His own.

(Tune: Crown Him with Many Crowns)
Short Meter Double 66.86.D

"IT IS FINISHED"

Don Fortner
It is finished! " Jesus cried;
Then He bowed His head and died,
Died for sins, but not His own,
And redemption's work was done.

Justice then was satisfied,
God's elect are justified:
Righteousness our Lord brought in,
And removed His people's sin!

Sin and death and hell subdued,
By the power of Christ's blood,
Grace to sinners now is giv'n
Pardon, holiness, and heav'n.

"It is finished!" Can it be
That Christ's blood was shed for me?
Yes, I know He died for me,
For by grace I now believe.

Pleading Christ's atoning blood,
Kneeling at the throne of God-
Gone my guilt! My sin is gone!
"It is finished!" All is done!

(Tune: Depth of Mercy)
77.77.

(109)

GOD'S ONE COMMANDENT

Don Fortner
I see recorded in the Word
God's one commandment very plain:
He says, Believe on Christ my Son,
And I will save you from your sin.

God does not bid me pray, or feel,
Or bid me do a single thing:
He simply says, Believe my Son,
And faith will full salvation bring.

My God, I take You at Your Word:
Though I'm a guilty wretch undone,
Unworthy of Your love and grace,
I trust the merits of Your Son.

My only hope, my only plea
Is that Christ lived and died for me:
But Christ alone is all I need,
He's all that God requires of me.

(Tune: Just As I Am)
Long Meter 88.88.

(110)

GOD IS LOVE

Don Fortner
God is love'!-He loves us freely,
With an everlasting love.
In eternal love He chose us
And ordained our place above.
"God is love"-See how He shows it,
See His Son upon the tree!
God incarnate died for sinners,
To forgive and set us free.

"God is love'!-In love He called us
By His Spirit's grace and pow'r:
By almighty grace He saved us,
At His own appointed hour.
"God is love'-His love, most tender,
Wisely rules this world below
For the good of all His people,
And all good He will bestow.

"God is love'!-He will preserve us,
He will keep us to the end:
He will never, never leave us,
Nor will let us e'er leave Him.
"God is love'-And if we know Him,
We will love each other too,
And in love we'll walk before Him
'Til our God makes all things new.

(Tune: Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus)
Trochaic with Refrain 87.87.

(111)

ONE WITH JESUS CHRIST MY SAVIOR

Don Fortner
I am one with Christ my Savior,
Joined to Him by faith alone:
Trusting Christ for full salvation,
I'm complete, the work's all done.

(Refrain)
One with Jesus Christ my Savior,
One with God's own holy Son,
One with Christ I am accepted–
Holy as the holy One!

One with Christ by God's election,
I'm in Him the righteous Man:
One with Christ the dying Savior,
One with Him Who rose again.

All that Jesus did and suffered,
All He is in heav'n above,
All is mine by imputation,
All by sov'reign, saving love.

One with Christ, my hope of glory,
One with Him I am secure,
God will never, never leave me,
For this union must endure.

(Tune- Let the Lower lights be Burning)
Trochaic with Refrain 87.87.

(112)

SPIRIT OF GOD, COME UPON US

Don Fortner
Holy Father, God of love,
Send Your Spirit from above,
Your servant anoint this hour
With a holy, heav'nly power.

As our pastor preaches grace,
Cause Your pow'r to fill this place:
While he points us to the Son,
Holy Spirit, make Him known.

Leave, O leave us not alone!
Make Your mighty presence known–
To awake the dead in sin,
And revive the souls of men.

Make the Word which You inspire
Burn within our hearts like fire:
With that hammer of Gods throne
Break these flinty hearts of stone.

(Tune: Softly Now the Light of Day)
77.77

(113)

I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK

Don Fortner
Behold," the Friend of sinners says,
"I stand at the door, and knock."
He is speaking to you and me,
"I stand at the door, and knock;
If any man will hear my voice,
I'll come in, and sup with him;
If any man opens his heart,
I'll come in, and sup with him."

Jesus, long I've heard You calling,
Gently knocking at my door;
But I had no will to open,
Though You knocked at my heart's door,
'Til, by love and grace unfailing,
You opened the door Yourself:
Now my heart bums for You, Savior–
Please don't leave me to myself.

Savior, see my door is open,
I have heard Your voice, Divine:
Enter, Lord, come take possession
Of my heart, and make it Thine!
Let me feast in sweet communion
On Your righteousness and blood:
Let me know Your cleansing power,
Christ, my Savior and my God.

(Tune: Come, Thou Fount)
87.87. Double

(114)

I HAVE A HOPE

Don Fortner
I have a Hope both strong and sure,
A Hope within the veil–
'Tis Christ the Lord, my Advocate;
He pleads and must prevail.

My name is written on His breast,
Inscribed by love and grace:
In Him my heart finds peace and rest,
He does my soul embrace.

Midst tribulation, pain and toil,
He is my Hope and Stay:
I trust His gracious providence
To guide me in His way.

I have no hope within myself,
Christ is my All and All:
My care I cast upon my Lord,
And for His grace I call.

And when my time on earth is done,
And all my care shall cease,
I'll see my Savior as He is,
My Hope I shall embrace!

(Tune: Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?)
Common Meter 86.86.

(115)

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH: THE LORD IS THERE

Don Fortner
Jehovah-shammah, God is there,
Where ransomed men are found:
The Lord is with His chosen ones,
Whose hearts are heaven bound.

Jehovah-shammah, Church of God,
Though trials are sharp and long,
Be not afraid, the Lord is near,
His holy arm is strong.

Jehovah-shammah, may it be
That in this place this hour
The Lord will let us see His face,
And show His saving power.

Jehovah-shammah, look, my heart,
To that bright world above–
The Lord is there, City of God,
Where saints all rest in love.

(Tune: All Hail the Power)
Common Meter 86.86.

(116)

MY GOD, I WOULD CONFESS MY SIN

Don Fortner
My God, I would confess my sin,
But where shall I begin?
All that I think, or say, or do
Is sin and only sin!
My righteousness and my good works
I now renounce as vile:
Arising from my sinful heart
My noblest works are vile!

Within my loathsome heart I see
A den of all that's vile,
A pit of dark iniquity,
My heart, my heart is vile!
A helpless, worthless sinner, Lord,
I fall before Your throne:
O God, be merciful to me,
A sinful wretch undone.

I know that if You will You can,
By Your almighty grace,
Save me, a wretched sinner, Lord,
And all my sins erase.
I plead Christ's blood, His precious blood,
And nothing but the blood:
Be pleased, great God, for Jesus' sake,
To save me by the blood.

(Tune: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(117)

THE CHOSEN RACE

Don Fortner
The Lord's elect all number more
Than sands upon the shore,
A multitude that's greater far
Than all the heav'nly stars.

(Refrain)
And I'm one of that chosen race
By God's eternal grace:
An heir of God, joint-heir with Christ;
I'm saved in Jesus Christ!

Christ for His own atonement made,
Their ransom fully paid:
Redeemed by Jesus'precious blood
They're reconciled to God.

Those favored ones, deserving wrath,
Are saved from sin and death;
By sov'reign grace they're born again,
In Christ freed from all sin.

Complete in Christ, they are secure;
By grace they must endure,
'Til blameless at God's throne they stand
A race of perfect men.

(Tune: My Faith Has Found a Resting Place)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(118)

ALL THINGS ON EARTH ARE VANITY

Don Fortner
A11 things on earth are vanity,
The things of time decay:
The dearest and most pleasant things
Will soon dissolve away.

Even the blessings here enjoyed
Of friend and family,
In time they too will be destroyed:
All things are vanity.

Let me regard not things below
Nor give them greater care
Than when I to my grave shall go,
Or Jesus shall appear.

MY soul as a weaned child must be,
My heart's affecfion set
On heaven and eternity,
On Christ, my living Head.

(Tune: Alas I and Did My Savior Bleed?)
Common Meter 86.86.

(119)

I FIND COMFORT IN MY GOD

Don Fortner
When I'm distressed by things on earth,
And'vexed by trials and pain,
I look to God's unseen throne,
And there find peace again.

Refrain)
I find comfort in my God,
My peace comes from His throne:
His oath, His covenant, and His blood
Give me a blessed calm.

When troubled by my many sins,
I turm to Christ my Lord:
I lay my filthy soul on Him,
And trust His pardoning blood.

When I am weak and tempted sore,
And think that I will fall,
I trust the Spirit's keeping pow'r,
And for His mercy call.

Though I am weak, my God is strong,
His covenant still is good;
I find my hope and joy and peace,
Trusting my covenant God.

(Tune: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(120)

"BUT GOD!"

Don Fortner
My soul in darkness, death and sin,
Was lost and all undone:
I did not know my lost estate;
I could not see God's Son.

(Refrain)
But God, in grace and pow'r Divine,
Stepped in to save my soul:
His gracious purpose has prevailed,
And He has made me whole.

My heart defied God's holy law,
Refusing to be ruled:
I would not hear the gospel's call–
This heart would not be wooed.

God would not lose His chosen one,
The soul redeemed by blood:
His Spirit broke into my heart,
And then I understood.

"But God!" What blessed words of grace!
He broke my stubborn will:
Throughout the great eternal age
I'll chant His praises still.

(Tune: I Want a Principle Within)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(121)

GRACE

Don Fortner
Grace! How good, how kind, how free;
Grace this wand'ring sinner found!
Grace has cleansed and set me free–
Grace poured out from Jesus' wounds.

Grace devised the way of life:
Grace brought our Immanuel down:
Grace imputes His righteous life
To God's loved and chosen sons.

Grace caused Christ our holy Lord,
To assume our sin and shame:
In our place condemned He stood,
Paid our debt our souls redeemed!

Thank you, Lord, for grace divine,
Given to such worthless worms:
Through Your grace Your glory shines:
We for grace Your praise return.

(Tune: Depth of Mercy)
77.77.

(122)

GOD HAS MERCY ON WHOM HE WILL

Don Fortner
God has mercy on whom He will,
And whom He will, He hardens still:
To whom He will He gives His grace,
And when He will, He hides his face.
Let none despise God's sov'reign throne,
He does what He will with His own:
It is His right to save or kill
According to His sov'reign will.

Yes, God saves some and others leaves
To reap the fruit of their own ways–
In the eternal ages past
God made His choice, and it stands fast.
Aware that I'm a guilty man,
And that I'm in God's sov'reign hand,
Prostrate, I fall before His throne
A wretched, helpless, guilty one.

"Lord, if You will, You can," I say,
"Take all my guilt and sin away:
A guilty sinner at Your throne,
I beg for mercy through Your Son."
Now, trusting Jesus Christ God's Son,
I know that I'm His chosen one!
And God's etemal, sov'reign choice
Makes this poor sinner's heart rejoice!

(Tune: Sweet Hour of Prayer)
Long Meter Double 88.88.D

(123)

HALLELUJAH! GOD HAS SAVED ME

Don Fortner
I was lost and did not know it,
Rushing madly to my end:
But my God, Who's rich in mercy,
Would not let me die in sin.

(Refrain)
Hallelujah! God has saved me,
Saved me by His sov'reign grace!
Jesus died, the Spirit called me,
I am saved by sovereign grace.

Chosen by my Heav'nly Father,
And redeemed by Jesus'blood,
I am justified, forgiven,
And accepted by my God!

God the Spirit came in power,
Gave me life and set me free:
He revealed my blessed Savior,
And created faith in me.

God has saved me and will keep me,
By the power of His grace:
He will guide, guard and protect me,
'Til I see my Savior's face.

(Tune: I Will Sing of My Redeemer)
87.87. Trochaic with Refrain

(124)

MY FATHER'S CHASTENING ROD

Don Fortner
My soul's distressed, my heart is pained,
Because Your chastening rod
Has stricken me, Your erring child,
To drive me to my God.

I offer no complaint to You,
I see Your hand of love:
The things that happen now to me
Come from my God above.

My gracious Father's chastening hand
My Father's love does prove,
Who for the welfare of His child
Corrects His child in love.

And so, my God, I give You thanks
For even this my test
Do now with me what You deem good,
Whate'er Your love deems best.

(Tune: Am I a Soldier)
Common Meter 86.86.

(125)

GLORY, GLORY, I'M FORGIVEN

Don Fortner
Glory, glory, I'm forgiven!
All my sins are washed away:
Christ, by His great blood atonement,
All my sin has put away.
Sin imputed to my Savior,
When He died upon the tree
As the Substitute for sinners,
God will not impute to me.

Glory, glory, I'm accepted!
Robed in Christ's own righteousness,
I'm a child, an heir of heaven,
Saved by God's almighty grace.
Christ's obedience to the Father
Is imputed now to me:
In God's sight I'm pure and holy,
He declares me so to be.

Glory, glory, I'll not perish!
In Christ's hands I am secure:
He who saved me, sure, will keep me;
By God's grace I shall endure.
This is not a vain presumption;
I just take Him at His Word:
Christ has sworn, "They shall not perish
Who believe on Me their Lord!"

(Tune: Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus)
Trochaic With Refrain 87.87.

(126)

THERE IS FORGIVENESS

Don Fortner
Come, weary, helpless, guilty one,
Lost and condemned in sin,
Repent, believe, and trust God's Son;
His blood can make you clean.

(Refrain)
There is forgiveness with our God,
O sinner, hear His Word-
There is forgiveness through the blood,
Forgiveness with the Lord!

Behold God's Son, the Substitute-
God made Him to be sin!
That He might righteousness impute,
To all believing men.

Complete atonement Christ has made,
Redemption's work is done!
The ransom price was fully paid
By Christ, and Christ alone!

Would you be righteous in God's sight,
Forgiven of all sin?
Then trust the Savior crucified,
Who was for sinners slain.

(Tune: My Faith Has Found a Resting Place)
Common Meter 86.86.

(127)

IN CHRIST WE ARE FREE

Don Fortner
All children of wrath, in bondage and sin,
We helplessly lay, condemned and unclean:
God's law, in its infinite justice and wrath,
Demanded we suffer an eternal death.

But long before time had ever begun,
One stood in our place, God's glorious Son:
He offered Himself to go live among men,
And give His own life to atone for our sin.

The great Substitute, behold, He has come!
The price has been paid; the work is all done:
Christ took on Himself the great load of our sin–
He poured out His blood, and He put away sin.

God's justice and law are now satisfied,
And all who believe have been justified:
Through faith in the blood of the Lamb we are free,
From sin's condemnation, eternally free!

(Tune: O Worship the King)
10 10.11 11.

(128)

BEHOLD THE SON!

Don Fortner
Behold the Son, our Surety!
Into His hands our souls were giv'n;
With God, our Father, He agreed
To bring us safely home to heav'n:
Behold the Lamb of God dying!
He gave His life for His elect–
Yes, Jesus bought us with His blood–
His ransomed ones He will protect

Behold the Son of God reigning
As King upon the throne above;
All things given into His hands,
To save the people of His love:
Behold the Man upon the throne,
Who rules in heaven, earth and hell,
That Man is Christ, our Savior God,
His throne should all our fears dispel.

Behold our Advocate on high!
He wears our names upon His heart,
He will not charge His own with sin,
Nor let us from His love depart:
Look, look to Christ, to Christ alone,
Trust not the works that you have done;
His blood and righteousness alone
Secure your place before His throne.

(Tune: Sweet Hour of Prayer)
Long Meter Double 88.88.D

(129)

OUR GOD REMAINS UNMOVED

Don Fortner
Rejoice, my soul, in every state,
Our God remains unmoved;
No turns of providence abate
God's care for those He loved.

(Refrain)
O what a blessed calm,
What can my soul alarm?
My God, Who changes not,
Will keep me from all harm.

To His decree God will adhere,
Though earth and sky depart:
No trials or temptations here
Can tear us from His heart

Our Sur'ty knows for whom He stood,
For whom He gave His life;
And we who trust His precious blood,
Possess eternal life.

"I am the Lord, and I change not,"
Is God's own promise sure:
The Word of God I cannot doubt,
His people are secure!

(Tune: O How I Love Jesus)
Common Double Meter 86.86.D

(130)

REJOICE!

Don Fortner
Rejoice, believer, in the Lord,
Again, I say, Rejoice!
Rejoice to know that Christ is Lord,
Rejoice in all He does.

Though sin may cause your heart to sigh,
Rejoice in Christ's shed blood:
He died that you might never die,
Redeemed you by His blood.

Our joy is not in earthly things,
In things that time may change:
Our joy is in our God and King,
In Him who stays the same.

Always, and in all things, I say,
Children of God, Rejoice!
In everything God has His way:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!

(Tune: O For A Thousand Tongues)
Common Meter 86.86.

(131)

GRACE HAS MADE ME WILLING NOW

Don Fortner
My heart subdued by sovereign grace,
I willingly my Lord embrace:
I would not trust, I would not bow,
But grace has made me willing now.

(Refrain)
Dear Lord, Your love and grace prevail,
You've conquered this poor sinner's will!
I trust You Christ, trust You alone,
And gladly bow before Your throne.
Yes, grace has made me willing now,
My Lord, my God, I gladly bow.

Behold, the Lamb of God I see,
Hanging upon the cursed tree:
The Substitute for sinners slain
Convicts me of my guilt and sin.

Now Jesus reigns, the God-Man King,
With power over everything!
He gives eternal life to all
Who, trusting Him, for mercy call.

O sinner, trust God's saving grace,
Christ's blood and righteousness embrace,
Bow to the Savior's sov'reign sway,
Then you, with confidence, may say–

(Tune: Beulah Land)
88.88.88. with Refrain

(132)

GOD'S ELECT SHALL ENDURE

Don Fortner
God's elect shall endure,
Our hope we will hold fast,
In Christ eternally secure,
We'll mwh our home at last.

(Refrain)
All of the chosen race
Shall meet around God's throne,
To praise Him for His sovereign grace
And make His glories known.

Washed in the Savior's blood,
Robed in His righteousness,
Freely we're justified by God!
Out hearts are kept in peace.

Christ must be satisfied,
His death was not in vain:
Those sinners for whom Jesus died
Cannot for sin be slain.

God's purpose cannot fail,
His grace none can defeat:
The Spirit, by whom we are sealed,
Was never conquered yet.

(Tune: Crown Him with Many Crowns)
Short Meter Double 66.86.D

(133)

THANKSGIVING TO GOD

Don Fortner
Children of God, lift up your hearts,
Lift up your voices too,
With praise and gratitude to God,
Thanksgiving is His due.

Thank You, O Lord, for mercies great,
In daily providence:
All our provisions come from You,
And You are our Defense."

Thank You for full salvation free,
Tbrough Jesus Christ, the Son:
For life and immortality,
The Spirit's work begun.

Receive our thanks, O Lord, we pray,
Accept us now by grace:
We hope to spend eternity
Thanking You for Your grace.

(Tune: O for a Faith that Will Not Shrink)
Common Meter 86.86.

(134)

BEHOLD, I COME

Don Fortner
"Behold, I come," our Savior said,
The Savior promised long,
"I come to do Thy will, O God,"
And thus our Hope was born.
Behold, the virgin has conceived,
And bom a Son of flesh;
His name is called Immanuel,
God dwells in human flesh!

The angels left their high abode
To see this mystery–
The great, almighty, sov'reign God,
A babe of feeble clay!
Mortals beheld His lovely face,
The Father's only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
Christ came to save His own.

His spotless life of righteousness
And sin-atoning death
Fulfilled His Father's holy will,
And satisfied His wrath.
Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Your glories shall proclaim:
Enthroned in heaven as our King,
We love to praise Your name.

(Tune: It Came upon a Midnight Clear)
Common Meter Double 86.86.D

(135)

CLAIMING THE MERITS OF CHRIST

Don Fortner
Begone all fear and unbelief!
Has not the Father put to grief
His spotless, holy Son for me,
Upon the cruel, cursed tree?
And will the righteous Judge of men
Condemn me for that debt of sin
He charged to my great Surety,
When He was slain at Calvary?

Complete atonement Christ has made,
The law's demanded price He paid:
All that His people owed to God
He satisfied by His own blood.
God's wrath on me shall not take place,
I'm robed in Christ's own righteousness:
He shed for me His precious blood,
My sins are drowned beneath the flood!

Christ Jesus my discharge procured,
The whole of wrath divine endured:
The law's tremendous curse He bore;
Justice can never ask for more.
Payment God cannot twice demand,
First at my bleeding Surety's hand,
And then demand the price from me,
For whom Christ died at Calvary.

Be still, my soul, and find sweet rest–
The merits of my great High Priest,
His righteousness and precious blood,
Have satisfied the Holy God.
I'll trust Christ's efficacious blood,
And never fear the wrath of God,
Since Jesus Christ has died for me,
And lives for me to intercede.

(Tune: Sweet Hour of Prayer)
