MESSIAH'S MISSION The Mission Christ Come To Accomplish
Isaiah 61:1-11
Introduction:
The title of my message tonight is Messiah's Mission. Both the prophets of the Old Testament and the Apostles of the New emphatically declare that the Messiah, the Redeemer, The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God came into this world on a mission. He came here with a work assigned to him, a mission to fulfil, a task to perform. And we are never left in the dark concerning that mission. Christ came here to…
1. Do The Will of God as our Covenant Surety (Heb. 10:5).
2. Save His People from Their Sins (Matt. 1:21).
3. Redeem and Sanctify God's Elect by His Blood (Heb. 10).
4. Gather God's Elect (John 10:16).
He not only came to do these things He has done them. With the Son of God, failure is an impossibility!
- Isaiah 42:4
- John 17:4
- John 19:30
Proposition: Christ came to save somebody; and all whom He came to save shall be saved!
Divisions: In Isaiah 61 we have a prophetic declaration of our Savior's mission and its accomplishment by him. Let's look at these eleven verses under these four heads
1. The Savior Proclaimed (vv. 1-3).
2. The Salvation Portrayed (vv. 4-6).
3. The Saints Promoted (vv. 7-9).
4. The Savior Praised (vv. 10-11).
I. The Savior Proclaimed (vv. 1-3).
Imaginary scholars and pretended intellectuals have debated for years over who is speaking in Isaiah 61:1-3. Honest men simply turn to Luke 4:18 to find out who is speaking in Isaiah 61:1!
The Speaker in our text is Christ himself. Hear what he says and rejoice.
A. He has a special anointing for his work by God the Holy Spirit.
- Matthew 3:13-17
- Exodus 30:22-23
B. He is the Only Man in History to be a Prophet, a Priest, and a King.
1. As a Prophet, he preached good tidings to the meek.
2. As a Priest, he binds up the broken hearted.
3. As a King, he proclaims liberty to the captives Lawful Captives!
- Free Justification!
- Complete Pardon!
- Perfect Liberty!
C. The Lord Jesus Christ, by his obedience unto God in his life and in his death, and by the efficacious grace and power of his Spirit, has brought in the year of jubilee for God's Elect! (v. 3).
1. Jubilee, Typified Salvation.
2. The Jubilee Trumpet is the Gospel.
3. To the Penitent, (Ashes), he gives the Beauty of Grace.
4. To the Mourner, He gives the Joy of Pardon.
5. To the Heavy Laden, He gives the Garment of Praise.
D. All Who are Saved are Called "Trees of Righteousness, the Planting of the Lord!"
- Trees!
- Righteousness!
- Planted of God!
E. This salvation, which Christ Accomplishes is For The Glory of God.
- I Corinthians 1:29-31
- Ephesians 2:7
- Ephesians 1:3-14
II. The Salvation Portrayed (vv. 4-6).
A. It is a restoration of sinners from ruin (v. 4).
B. It is a gathering of strangers into one body in unity and peace (v. 5; Eph. 2:11-19).
C. It is the making of a Holy Priesthood (I Pet. 2:9) (v. 6).
D. It is the assembling of Servants for God (v. 6).
E. It is the gathering of that Treasure Hidden in the Field (The riches of the Gentiles), which Christ purchased (v. 6; Matt. 13).
III. The Saints Promoted (vv. 7-9).
A. They shall have a Double Reward (v. 7: 40:12).
B. They shall Posses All The Blessings of God's Everlasting Covenant Grace.
C. They shall be Acknowledged as The People, "The Seed, which The Lord Hath Blessed!"
IV. The Savior Praised (vv. 10-11).
Here is the response of all redeemed sinners to the experience of God's saving grace in Christ.
A. We rejoice in our God!
B. We acknowledge the salvation is God's work alone.
C. We glory in imputed righteousness.
D. We are confident of the salvation of God's elect throughout all nations (v. 11).
Not one of the chosen shall perish. God's elect must and shall be saved. It is guaranteed by three things.
- The Father's Purpose!
- The Son's Purchase!
- The Spirit's Power!
