IN EVERY THING
Eph 5:24

Heshimu Colar

"Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing."–Eph 5:24

This command is strong, serious, and simple. Let the wives be submitted to their own husbands in every thing. The Lord has made no exception, except for that which defies the gospel, for our submission is in the Lord (Col 3:18). Yet, more than that, the submission is something that we're to render regardless of the rightness of the husband; it is based on the Lord's rightness and no one else's. The Lord is the rewarder of them that do right, and He will reward the relationship, for He's chosen the wife's submission to be one of her chief qualities, and when God sees it, even as a believer sees it, that subjection is attractive and of great price (I Pet 3:1-7).

Sarah told Abraham what to do at least twice. Once, he listened to her, but the Lord rebuked the making of Ishmael saying, "But my covenant will establish with Isaac". Yet, another time, he went to God with what Sarah said, and he found from God that she was right. God told him, "in all that Sarah has said unto you, hearken unto her", so that submission doesn't mean the same as silence or even agreement (Gen 21:12). Sarah spoke, even as you and I speak unto the Lord, being submissive to His authority, yet making petitions before the throne.

Christ submitted to the Father as He said, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as you will". He made the request in submission, but the request isn't banned.

Likewise, as wives and husbands communicate in their home, not much is said about the submission except, "in every thing". Therefore, have the attitude of "I will do as my husband desires, and I will serve him", and if you have this, then God has blessed you, will bless you, and by you, He may bless your husband also, even if he doesn't believe. Submission wins us to Christ, for He lifts up the humble and gives the Spirit to them that obey Him. And, this submission is receiving the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation in Him. In 1 Sam 25, Nabal rebels against David, even though David has been good to him. Likewise, our flesh rebelled against the Lord, when we denied Him His due as Lord and Savior. Yet, like Abigail, we bow to Him now, and this obedience is receiving the goodness of the Lord, for we have not obeyed the gospel, unless we believe, that no matter how miserably depraved we are, we are forgiven. The message came to the murderers of God's Son, and Peter told them, "Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins", so that we're to believe that sins are gone by the obedience of Christ to the cross (Acts 2:38). Christ didn't die, so that we can add something to Him by faith. Christ died to SATISFY and atone the anger of God, so that we may have righteousness and salvation by faith. He died to be Lord, and by the confession of Him as such, we are saved. Thus, I rebel against the gospel if I don't believe my sins are forgiven, and I seek acceptance with God on my terms. I don't have to be a devil worshipper literally by offering up chicken's blood to Satan. All that I must do is refuse the message of Peace that Christ comes with, and like Nabal, I rebel (I Sam 25:6). Yet, like Nabal, our flesh has died, and we're obedient now. And, like Abigail, we're rewarded in our service, even as Christ submitted to the Father and believed His goodness, in spite of the sins He paid for at Calvary. He believed the promises against all odds, even crying out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me", but He didn't deny the goodness of God while He questioned. Thus, His submission, like yours and mine, is how He got the reward. Even as a subject wife will see more of God's blessing to her home than she could have garnered by disobedience. This is the way.

Let it be known the way for the woman to win the man and honor Christ in the home is to submit to him. Every man in his godly mind will honor it and love you easier as the result.
